Privacy Policy
Last updated: 6 November 2026 — Untangle is developed by Paul Kelly, England, UK.
Untangle is a voice journaling and task management app. We built it to help you think clearly. We want to be equally clear about how your data is handled.
What stays on your devices
Your journal entries and todos are stored on your iPhone. If you are signed in to iCloud, they are also synced to your own private iCloud storage, so they survive a lost or replaced phone. That storage belongs to your Apple Account and is governed by Apple’s privacy policy: we cannot read it, and none of it is stored on our servers. Your profile (including any photo you add), your categories and what Untangle has learned from your changes to them, and the facts and words Untangle has learned about you, are kept in the same private iCloud storage, so they come back with your journal on a new phone or after reinstalling; without iCloud they stay on this iPhone. If you use Untangle on Apple Watch, today’s list is synced between your iPhone and Watch directly over your local Apple device ecosystem — no external servers are involved.
Your device’s own backup system (iCloud or iTunes/Finder) may include this data as part of a normal device backup. That backup is governed by Apple’s privacy policy, not ours.
Turning your voice into text
When you speak an entry, your voice is turned into text by Apple’s speech recognition on your iPhone. Your recording is not sent to us or to Anthropic. If you record on Apple Watch and your iPhone can’t make out the recording on the device, it may be sent once to Apple’s speech recognition service to be transcribed, under Apple’s privacy policy.
What leaves your devices — and why
When you record or type a journal entry, its text is sent to Anthropic — an AI company — so the app can extract your todos, identify completions, and surface insights. Text is also sent when Untangle plans your Today list or writes the short summaries of your days, weeks and months. This is the core function of the app.
Requests are routed through a lightweight server we operate to keep our API key secure. That server forwards your request to Anthropic immediately and keeps no record of the content of your journal entries. It keeps a count of how much each install uses the AI, labelled with a scrambled identifier made on your device (not your Apple ID or an advertising identifier), so we can keep costs in check; these counts hold no journal content and are deleted after 90 days. A short daily summary of these counts is emailed to the developer. To prevent abuse, the server also counts requests from each IP address for about a minute. Cloudflare, whose infrastructure our server runs on, may process connection-level data (such as IP addresses) in accordance with their own privacy policy.
What Anthropic does with your data
To do its job, each request includes the text you’re working on together with the context Untangle needs to understand it: details from your profile (such as your name and the people and interests you’ve added), your open todos, recent journal entries when planning your day, and your categories with what Untangle has learned about them. Per Anthropic’s privacy commitments for API usage, they do not use inputs submitted via the API to train their models. Anthropic may keep requests for a limited time under its own policy, which you can read at anthropic.com/privacy.
Your journal text reaches Anthropic with no user account, email address, or device identifier attached. Each request is independent — there is no account and no session history.
Crash and diagnostic reports
To find and fix bugs, Untangle sends crash reports and app-freeze reports to Sentry, an error-monitoring service. The app also records that it launched, so we can tell whether a release is stable.
These reports contain technical information only: where in our code the problem happened, your device model, your iOS version, and which version of Untangle you were running. They are labelled with a random identifier that Untangle generates on your own device — it is not your Apple ID, your device’s serial number, or any advertising identifier, and it is discarded if you delete the app.
No journal text, todo, insight, name or email address is ever included in a crash report. This is diagnostic data about the app, not about you. It is never used for advertising and never sold.
Crash reporting is active in the version of Untangle you install from the App Store or TestFlight.
Reports you choose to send
If you tap “Fix a mistake” on a todo or an entry, the note you write is sent so Untangle can make the fix and the developer can see what went wrong. If you switch on “Include what I said”, the exact words that todo came from are sent with it, and you see them before you send. These reports go through the same error-monitoring service (Sentry). Nothing is sent unless you tap Send, and the rest of your journal is never included.
Security
- Your profile is kept in your own private iCloud key-value storage, which only Untangle can read on your devices.
- The local database is protected by iOS file encryption: it can’t be read after your iPhone restarts until you unlock it.
- Face ID / Touch ID app lock is active whenever your device supports it.
Business model
Untangle will be funded by subscriptions, not by your data. We have no advertising frameworks and are not connected to any ad network.
Your rights
Your data lives on your iPhone and in your own iCloud, so you are always in direct control of it. You can view, edit, or delete any journal entry, todo, or profile detail within the app at any time, and a deletion is removed from your iCloud copy too. Uninstalling Untangle removes its data from your iPhone; any copy in your iCloud stays in your Apple Account until you delete it from your iCloud storage settings.
If you have a question about your data or want to raise a concern, contact us at hello@untanglemyday.com. If you are in the UK or EEA and feel your concern has not been addressed, you have the right to contact your local data protection authority. In the UK, that is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
The Untangle website and waitlist
If you join the waitlist or apply to test Untangle at untanglemyday.com, we collect your email address and, if you apply to test, your answers to a few short questions. We use them only to tell you about Untangle and to choose who to invite to test it, and we rely on your consent to do so. The form is run by Tally (Tally BV, Belgium), which stores your answers on our behalf. We don’t sell or share them, and we never use them for advertising.
We keep these details until 12 months after Untangle launches, or until you ask us to delete them, whichever is sooner. To be removed, reply to any email from us or write to hello@untanglemyday.com.
The website counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and does not identify you.
Children
Untangle is intended for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly process data from anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how your data is handled, we will update the date at the top of this page and note the change in the App Store release notes for that version.
